This model is from July 1973 so just one year younger than me! I often wonder about a watches life, the places its been and wrists its been on and then the 50 year wait for me to grow up, have a midlife crisis and then get into watch repair, buy the watch and fix it!
This watch was bought originally as a donor for the watch in the video but I got a little addicted to them and the donor quickly became a restoration.
A new crystal was needed on this one and they are very expensive (for what they are) if you want a genuine Seiko one. The glass is glued to a ring that fits in the movement. The glue is impossible to soften and the only way to free it from the ring is to smash it out.
Once this is done you measure the aperture of the ring and the thickness of the crystal. Sternkuez do some XMF crystals with bevelled edges. You have to find one with the right diameter and roughly the same thickness. I then use UV Sternkuez glue and a UV oven to cure the crystal to the ring.
If you get it right you get a good bond and without any excess to clean up.
Here is the Elnix in its finished condition. They are a great compromise of mechanical and electronic from a very interesting era of horology.
