Here is the latest Vario to join my collection. I do like this brand but then I would as I also do their warranty work here in the UK. The Futurist is a bit special for me as its taking inspiration from the era of watch design I love the most, the 1970’s!
I am a huge fan of bold angled cases, bright dials and facet crystals and this is something all the Japanese brands did in their millions in the 70s but no one has really tried to bring that look back, until now thanks to Vario.
This is where modern watchmaking meets a retro look. The long 49mm lug to lug case, facet lugs and machined decorative casetop just draws you into that gorgeous blue sunburst dial. Nice wedge shaped indices continue that facet theme all set within the chapter ring.
All nicely presented under a sapphire faceted crystal!
Watch presents its crown at 12 which is rather unusual but it keeps for smooth lines and symmetry on the whole watch. The crown is actually very easy to operate as its quite a big diameter so using it to set the time or wind the watch is simple. Once set the automatic movement will keep it fully wound and keeping time.
To me Vario have just captured all I like in a 70s design but with a bit of their own flavour, its a slim watch despite the facet meaning it wears under the cuff well so could be used for any occasion formal or sports.
What makes this so special for me is that I know the brand owner well. Ivan Chua and I was there at the conception of this watch! I first met Ivan in person back in September of 2023 and we dined and chatted all things watches. I had asked him in advance if he would like to see any of my collection and his suggestion was to bring along some of my facet crystal watches. At the end of our evening Ivan then let slip that he was wanting to make a 70s inspired sports watch. I was delighted to hear this but I had to keep it a secret. I was able to see some of the designs and prototypes along the way which was really interesting. Here we are today with the final product and I really think he hit the nail on the head with this one!
